Everett officials sworn in; mayor appoints new police chief

The Everett City Council on Jan. 7 swore in Mayor Cassie Franklin and multiple council members and confirmed a new police chief for the city.
Judge Leonard administered oaths of office to Mayor Cassie Franklin and newly sworn council members. After the oaths, Franklin announced the promotion of Deputy Chief Robert Goetz to serve as Everett’s chief of police. The mayor said Goetz brings “truly unmatched experience” with more than three decades in patrol, investigations, regional task forces and professional standards work, and invited him to the podium for the oath.
At the podium, the person who took the oath identified themself as Robert Gantz and thanked the council and community. “It’s an honor for me to continue to serve the city of Everett,” the oath-taker said, noting long service with the department and mentorship received over his career.
Mayor Franklin praised departmental succession planning, saying the city is “in very good hands” with the outgoing leadership and the newly appointed chief. Council members welcomed the appointments and offered congratulations during council comments.
The council also swore in other elected and returning members during the ceremony. The meeting moved on after the oaths to routine agenda business.
The council’s swearing-in and the chief’s appointment took place at the start of the Jan. 7 session; further personnel confirmations and board appointments followed later in the meeting.
