The Town of Charlton Select Board voted on Jan. 13 to open the annual town meeting warrant for the May 18, 2026 meeting and discussed high-priority budget items that will shape town spending for fiscal year 2027.
Town staff told the board all departments must submit warrant articles by March 4 and that the board will be asked to close the warrant on March 10. Andrew, a town staff member, said school aid and related assessments remain the largest budget unknown until the governor’s budget is released: "we are taking a complete shot in the dark until the governor releases her budget," he said, noting the state number drives the town's net school aid estimate.
Board members said they expect school assessments, capital needs for the schools, public safety costs and the expense of staffing a new fire station to be the leading budget pressures. Officials discussed health insurance cost increases that affected FY26 and said the town is evaluating options for better value going into FY27.
The board asked departments to prioritize capital and public safety needs while staff prepares revenue and expense projections for further review. The Select Board scheduled a meeting with school officials in February to refine estimates once the governor’s budget is released.
Next steps: departments submit warrant articles by March 4 and the board will consider closing the warrant at their March 10 meeting.
