At a board meeting hosted at Mulberry Elementary, the East Whittier City School District honored Teacher of the Year Rochelle Martinez, Classified Employee of the Year Alma Curiel, multiple service-pin recipients and volunteer Vania Alvarado.
The East Whittier City School District Board of Education met at Mulberry Elementary and recognized staff and volunteers for service to students and the community. Rochelle Martinez was introduced as Mulberry’s Teacher of the Year; the principal highlighted her 2018 hire, leadership of yearbook and PBIS spirit clubs and work connecting families to classroom learning. “I love teaching and I’m incredibly grateful to be part of this community,” Martinez said.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lilia Vargas presented milestone service pins to staff with decades of service, and the district highlighted a new “homegrown” pin for employees who attended district schools as students. The board and district also named Alma Curiel Classified Employee of the Year for her work as a supervision assistant, PTA secretary and site representative for DELAC and LCAP.
Volunteer recognition included Vania Alvarado, nominated for the Whittier Area School Administrators community service award for more than a decade of PTA and event support. Board members praised Mulberry’s folklorico dancers and cheerleaders for their performance at the meeting and thanked site staff for hosting the event.
The meeting concluded the recognition block with photos and brief remarks underscoring the district’s emphasis on long-term staff commitment and community partnerships.
