Mayor James Mosby read a proclamation declaring January 2026 as Human Trafficking Awareness Month and called attention to efforts by the Santa Barbara County Human Trafficking Task Force and local service providers.
Following the proclamation, Adrienne Ainsworth — who identified herself as a subject matter expert working with the county task force and Kingdom Causes and as a survivor from Lompoc — thanked the council and urged continued community support. Jeff Schafer, who said he has worked with the county District Attorney’s task force since 2014, described local partnerships with Micah Mission, the North County crisis and child protection center and other providers to assist survivors and run prevention programs.
Sabrina Ross, associate director with the North County crisis and child protection center and a task force member since 2013, told the council a survivor story she identified as 'Jane.' Ross said the teen was exploited locally, provided advocacy during law enforcement interviews, and that the center offers prevention programs and direct survivor services. Ross urged council and community support for continued work and left brochures in the council chamber lobby for residents.
What’s next: The proclamation will be posted on the city website as requested by the mayor, and staff indicated the city would provide translated materials and the proclamation text online for broader access.
