The board adopted policy changes on student records and employee technology use and authorized advertisement of several other policies after workshop review. Officials said the policies were previously reviewed and publicly advertised for comment.
The Volusia County School Board on Jan. 13 voted to adopt and advertise multiple board policies following earlier workshops.
Board attorney Dr. Gilbert Evans and district technology staff presented the items and said each policy had been reviewed and advertised in advance. The board approved adoption of policy 201 (student records) and amendments to policy 219, and approved adoption of policy 427 (employee technology use). The board also authorized advertisement of proposed amendments to policies 305 (physical education standards), 418 (standards of conduct), 616 (district reimagining), 718 (school district marketing) and 809 (school advisory councils), all of which had been discussed at a workshop earlier the same day.
"This policy has already been reviewed and advertised, so we're seeking for the board to approve the adoption," Dr. Gilbert Evans said of policy 201. Board members voted by voice for each item; no public comments were reported on those policies at the meeting.
Staff and trustees said the physical-education policy language would be updated to reference current state standards rather than a named historic standard, and that changes to standards-of-conduct policy clarify employee access to sensitive and confidential information in line with state and federal law.
The board’s action moves several policy changes forward for implementation and public notice; staff said advertised policies will be returned to the board for final adoption following the required comment periods where applicable.
