Boone County highway department reports cold storage building under budget, readies barricade trailer and installs speed signs

Boone County Highway Department told the administration committee on Jan. 8 that the county cold storage building project is progressing under budget and will provide shared storage for multiple agencies once complete. "That is coming along really well," the highway representative said, adding that some interior work has been completed in-house to keep costs down.
The department is also outfitting a 'trap control' trailer to centralize barricades after storm responses. The official said the trailer is being built with in-house welding and fabrication and will be outfitted in February with the goal of availability in March for use by all Boone County agencies.
On road safety, the highway department reported installing several speed limit signs targeted at intersections to reduce conflicts after a recent string of fatalities. "We got 4 of them done today..." the representative said, and additional posts remain to be installed next week pending supply of posts. The department emphasized intersection treatments and road widening as focal safety measures.
The highway report also noted the North Moon School Road project is expected to go to letting in February and that additional lettings will follow. The department invited board members to tour the cold storage site.
No formal motions were taken on these updates; staff will return to the appropriate committees with bid documents and contract recommendations when projects move to procurement.
