Tullahoma — Parks & Recreation Director JP Craft received board approval Monday to submit an intent-to-apply for a state Land and Park (LPRF) grant to finish a multi-field and parking project at Johnson Lane Recreation Complex.
Craft told the board an $800,000 capital improvement allocation already exists in the city budget and could serve as the required local match to pursue a roughly $1.2 million project that would add parking, an internal connector road and a 50/70 baseball/softball field. He said the city would pursue an estimated $400,000 in LPRF grant funds to multiply the local investment.
Board discussion covered egress and safety (directing vehicles off neighborhood streets during tournaments), potential to attract more travel tournaments and the possibility of using existing facilities to create ADA-compliant amenities for leagues that serve players with special needs. One alderman urged engineers to revisit a connector-road alignment that would not bisect park open space.
The board voted 6–0 to approve the intent to apply and to authorize the mayor to sign supporting documentation. Craft told the board the application timeline requires an intent submission this week and a full application by April.
