Reedsville — The City Council on Jan. 13 approved an interlocal agreement between the City of Reedsville and Rockingham County that formalizes fire and life‑safety inspection services for county‑owned public schools located inside the city limits.
George Farmer, assistant city manager and fire chief, explained inspections of county‑owned school facilities have historically been performed under an informal arrangement. Following a recent review by the Rockingham County Fire Marshal’s Office, Farmer said county and city attorneys and staff drafted the interlocal agreement to ensure compliance with applicable rules and to make responsibilities explicit. "We drafted what's before you for your consideration, and obviously staff and legal advise recommended to adopt it as presented," Farmer said.
Councilmember questions clarified the agreement applies only to public (county) schools and not to private schools, which remain the city's responsibility. A motion to approve the interlocal agreement was made, seconded and carried by the council.
What’s next: The agreement formalizes responsibilities between the city and county; implementation will proceed under the terms the attorneys reviewed and staff will coordinate inspection schedules between the agencies.
