Board members press for clearer timeline and funding for Woodville Tompkins improvements

During the boundary and facilities discussion board member Dr. Howard Hall said Woodville Tompkins has been treated as a middle school despite functioning as a high school in many ways, and urged the board to set a clearer vision and timeline for capital work and athletics.
"There's no way possible that this school should still function in the body of a middle school," Dr. Howard Hall said, arguing the site lacks adequate athletic fields and other high-school facilities. Several board members said alumni desires, principal plans and current students all need to be considered and that the district should marry alumni wishes with the principal's vision before committing to a long-term plan.
Staff responded that the district had not initially had available funds when earlier plans were made but that additional funds "landed" between July and October and were added to available balances in December/January. A board member asked when staff learned of the newly available funds; staff said the additional funds were reflected in the district's calculations in late December and early January and agreed to put Woodville on a timeline so the board and community can see next steps.
Staff also explained the term FCI when asked: "facility condition index," an assessment that considers roof, HVAC and plumbing condition and is used to prioritize renovations. The presenters said lower Woodville has a poor FCI score, upper Woodville a positive score based on more recent work, and that lower Woodville occupants (Building Bridges High School and compensatory programs) are planned to move to an alternative learning center once renovations are complete.
Board members asked for a public timeline that separates defining the long-term vision for Woodville from activation of facility spending, and several members asked the district to provide a clearer timetable and project-listing at an upcoming CIC or board retreat.
Next steps: staff said they will return with proposed timelines and updates to the East Blos s 5 project schedule and that the CIC committee will include updates on East Blos s funding allocations.
