Portuguese American Club's late renewal flagged over devices and pool-table counts
Summary
The Portuguese American Club, licensed since 1933, sought a late renewal. Board staff flagged prior late renewals, presence of poker machines, a discrepancy in pool-table count and an entry listing 13 "entertainment devices," and asked for follow-up information before final action.

A representative of the Portuguese American Club told the Lawrence Licensing Board on Jan. 7 that the club has held a license since 1933 and is seeking a late renewal after missing prior renewal deadlines.
Board staff and commissioners said there have been repeated late renewals and raised specific compliance questions: staff noted four poker machines at the club previously, the application listed 13 "entertainment devices," and a discrepancy emerged over how many pool tables are present. The club representative said there are three pool tables now (they had previously had four) and said they were unsure what the application counted as "devices," naming a jukebox, televisions, a ping‑pong table and a key machine.
The board did not finalize action on the renewal at the Jan. 7 meeting. Commissioners said they would follow up on device counts and outstanding compliance matters and treat poker machines as a separate compliance issue to be addressed.
Next steps: Staff will clarify the count of entertainment devices and whether poker machines remain in operation; the board will return to the renewal after staff completes that follow‑up.
