Advisory committee reviews reinstatement routes: CEUs, shadowing or NBCOT retake
Summary
Staff outlined reinstatement procedures for lapsed OT/OTA licenses: recent practitioners may submit CEUs or current certifications; those out of practice five or more years face live CEU and shadowing thresholds (30/60 CEU hours; 60/120 shadowing hours) or may retake the NBCOT exam. Members noted limited availability of live CEUs in Louisiana and discussed provider approval and fees.

LSBME staff reviewed the reinstatement process for occupational-therapy licenses that have been expired for two months or longer.
Staff said applicants who have practiced within the last five years may reinstate by submitting continuing-education credits (CEUs) or by demonstrating a current certification. Applicants out of practice five years or more must either complete a combination of live CEUs and supervised shadowing (examples given: 30 hours live CEUs and 60 hours shadowing for those out 5–10 years; 60 hours live CEUs and 120 hours shadowing for those out 10+ years) or retake the NBCOT exam as an alternative pathway to establish competence.
Committee members said live CEUs are scarce in Louisiana and noted fees and accreditation processes can create barriers. Staff explained that LSBME relies on nationally accredited providers and CE Broker to manage approved-course listings; if the committee wants to add a provider, it should place the request on the advisory committee agenda for approval and the Board will act next, after which CE Broker will be updated to accept that provider’s courses.
Staff said they will draft or clarify documentation about shadowing (what to include in the attestation) and complete internal procedures so applicants and supervisors know the required form and evidence when submitting shadowing hours. The advisory committee did not change the reinstatement policy and no vote on policy amendments was taken.
