OT advisory committee advises LSBME that "law and rules" course will meet ethics requirement

The Occupational Therapy Advisory Committee to the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners voted Jan. 9 to advise the Board that the agency’s current "law and rules" course satisfies the annual ethics training requirement for occupational therapists (OTs) and occupational therapy assistants (OTAs).
Committee members and staff discussed whether the LSBME course (sometimes called jurisprudence or ethics in practice) covers the necessary content. LSBME staff said the course is updated regularly, is available free to OTs/OTAs, and would ensure consistent annual coverage; staff recommended adopting the law-and-rules course as the ethics requirement. Carolyn Murphy moved to advise the Board to accept the course; Glenn Wallace seconded, and members voted in favor.
Members also described practical problems with CE Broker—duplicate entries and miscategorized course types—that have prevented some licensees from receiving proper credit. Staff said two LSBME staff members work regularly with CE Broker and that advisory committees approve accepted providers; once the advisory committee or Board approves a provider, staff will notify CE Broker so courses from that provider are accepted.
LSBME staff said they will place the advisory committee’s motion on the Board agenda this month; after Board action, staff will send a targeted email to OTs and OTAs using the contact addresses on file to notify providers and licensees of the change.
The advisory committee’s action was procedural guidance to the Board; final approval is subject to a Board vote.
