The board recognized security monitor Tyrique Johnson after administrators said he intervened to aid a choking student during a training shift, performing the Heimlich maneuver to clear the student's airway. "His ability to maintain composure ... prevented a potential tragedy and ensured that a frightened student returned home safely to their family," the superintendent said while presenting Johnson with an award. Johnson thanked the board and said, "I just wanted to thank God for allowing me to wake up that morning and head to work," and accepted the honor on behalf of the Newburgh School District staff.
Separately, student representative Ryan, speaking for Newburgh Free Academy, reported that high school students visited neighboring elementary schools for guest reading sessions in English, Spanish and Arabic; the NECSD holiday bazaar distributed food and toys to more than 100 families; and the boys varsity 4x400 team posted a time reported as about 3 minutes, 22 seconds at a recent meet.
Trustees applauded the recognitions and student engagement reports. The presentations were informational; no formal board action was required.
