County extension coordinator highlights 4‑H growth, volunteer contributions and outreach

Mary Kay Sheffield, Paulding County’s extension coordinator, presented the department’s FY25 highlights to the Board of Commissioners, including growth in youth programming and volunteer engagement.
Sheffield said the county’s 4‑H program meets with every fifth grade classroom once per month — "that's 109 4‑H club meetings in classrooms every month" — and that enrollment increased 6.8% last fiscal year. The program uses about 60 adult leader volunteers to staff specialty clubs such as archery, shotgun, cooking and livestock‑related activities. She reported $2,500 in scholarships awarded for camps and leadership events and said youth teams and individuals placed at state competitions.
Sheffield also praised Master Gardener volunteers: the transcript lists 23 certified Master Gardeners who contributed 1,829 service hours (noted as a value a little over $60,000) and who conducted outreach with libraries and local partners. She invited commissioners and residents to an upcoming family garden party on May 30.
