On Jan. 12 the Carpinteria City Council adopted a proclamation designating January 2026 as Human Trafficking Awareness Month and presented it to Tiffany Carty of the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office.
Carty, identified in the meeting as the victim‑witness program supervisor, outlined the local task‑force’s work and said the county has conducted 283 human‑trafficking investigations from 2017 to 2024, identified 94 alleged traffickers and made 59 arrests; she said 53 cases were charged and 37 resulted in guilty findings (as stated during the presentation). Carty emphasized the importance of survivor‑centered services, local outreach, training for teachers and health providers, and public‑facing awareness campaigns.
Council members asked how local groups can access task‑force resources; Carty said the DA website and the county task‑force site list partner organizations and that the DA’s office can provide training and materials. Council moved to adopt the proclamation, which passed unanimously.
