The Capitola Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit authorizing beer-and-wine sales at a new restaurant, Everistas Komal, proposed for a storefront in Capitola Mall.

Planning staff said the mall location is in a regional commercial zoning district and noted several existing alcohol licenses within the mall. Staff told the commission the site is in an area the state has designated as high in crime for review purposes and that Police Chief Sarah Ryan and officers reviewed the application and provided supportive findings. Based on that review staff recommended approval of the CUP.

Manuel Garcia, who said he previously worked at Veristos Komal and recently moved the business to Capitola, spoke in support of the application and thanked the commission for considering the restaurant. Commissioners welcomed the business and moved to approve the permit. The motion was seconded and the commission recorded affirmative votes, approving the CUP.

The approval allows Everistas Komal to pursue final licensing and any administrative steps necessary to begin beer-and-wine service at the Capitola Mall location. Staff noted ongoing mall alcohol licenses in the vicinity but did not specify a condition beyond standard CUP requirements or any mitigation measures specific to this permit.
