District 65 retools SACC summer program: attendance tracking, lower summer participation and plans to connect families to alternatives

District officials told the board they have been reviewing the School-Age Child Care (SACC) summer program and have implemented new systems to track enrollment and attendance after discovering historical record gaps.
Dr. O, who has been leading the program review, said that prior summers were tracked manually and that the district began enrolling SACC students in PowerSchool and training staff on attendance this past summer so the district could run reliable reports. "Attendance data was never tracked in PowerSchool until this summer," Dr. O said, noting those changes make it possible to evaluate the program's cost-effectiveness going forward.
Staff said the reimagined program saw participation fall from 61 students in the earlier year to 24 students last summer, and that some previous participants were not district-enrolled students — raising safety and tracking concerns. Staff also noted that the SACC summer program is optional and that the EACCP bargaining-unit contract requires the board to approve the summer program annually.
Officials described steps to support families if the district reduces or discontinues the in-district summer offering: using PowerSchool to contact prior SACC families directly, coordinating with established partners (for example the YMCA, city summer offerings, digital backpack and eLEAP), promoting sliding-scale scholarships, and providing in-person registration help. Staff said they would notify prospective summer employees early because many rely on summer income.
No decision to eliminate or materially change the SACC summer offering was recorded on Jan. 12; staff are preparing outreach plans and will return with updates.
