Scott Turnbull, superintendent of the Soquel Union Elementary School District, presented a Golden Bell Award from the California School Boards Association recognizing the district’s Equity Swim program, which reduces barriers to swimming lessons and junior guard opportunities by addressing transportation, language and cost. Turnbull thanked Community Services and Recreation Director Nikki Bryant and outreach lead Brennan Howard for their roles in making the program accessible. Turnbull said the program provides water-safety skills and belonging for students in a coastal community where aquatic training reduces risk.
Council members and staff thanked museum volunteers for a donated model of the Capitola Wharf and invited residents to apply for the rebranded civic-engagement program, Discover Capitola. No council action was required; the recognitions were ceremonial.
