Raquel, CalPERS' presenter, walked through rules for members who return to CalPERS‑covered work after retirement as retired annuitants. She said there are two key rules for retired annuitants: a 180‑day waiting period and a 960‑hour limit in a fiscal year.
"All CalPERS retirees must wait 180 days from their effective retirement date before returning to work as a retired annuitant," Raquel said, adding that some exceptions may apply. She also stated, "Retired annuitants may not work more than 960 hours in a fiscal year, which runs from July 1 through June 30. There are no exceptions to this limit." The presenter said both the retiree and the employer are responsible for tracking hours and that members can monitor hours through their myCalPERS account.
Raquel directed members to the CalPERS guide to employment after retirement and reiterated that more information is available on calpers.ca.gov and via myCalPERS secure messaging. She also provided CalPERS' phone line for member inquiries: (888) 225-7377.
The presenter closed by noting that specific account and eligibility questions should be handled in members' myCalPERS accounts or by contacting CalPERS directly; the rules described were presented as CalPERS policy guidance and subject to statutory authority.
