Westfield releases comprehensive plan soon; city and school board pledge regular coordination

Mayor and school board leaders used the joint session to preview a comprehensive plan they said will be released to the public within weeks and to commit to closer coordination between the two bodies.

The mayor said the plan (18 months in development) had engaged more than 6,500 residents and stakeholders and will provide a roadmap for land use and infrastructure that the school district can use for facility planning. "We gave the school a front seat on the bus," he said, describing school participation on subcommittees and steering committees.

School leaders and city councilors proposed annual demographer briefings and creation of a joint task force to coordinate boundary changes, transportation and youth‑sports infrastructure. The superintendent and board members discussed monitoring the results of a planned special census and using updated population counts to guide school facility timing.

Officials emphasized the plan is a vision, not a mandate for residents: the mayor said the plan “doesn't mean we're forcing people out of their homes” but instead gives a shared map for decisions about where roads, schools and commercial areas might go. No formal votes were taken at the session; officials said the plan will enter public review when it is released.
