Deputy Superintendent Chad Weezy and Executive Director of Academic Services Amy Inglekens told the board the recommendation is driven by declining enrollment patterns, cohort modeling and a desire to preserve current class-size commitments. The administration said the district used a three-year cohort average and local 4K-to-kindergarten coefficients to inform recommended openings, and that the majority of recommended spaces are in 4K through second grade.
'There's likely no chance we fill all 399,' one presenter said, adding that an application does not equal an accepted seat and that families still must accept an offer before the student is enrolled.
The presentation emphasized constraints on special-education capacity: the administration recommended no additional open-enrollment spaces for students with individualized education programs this year, citing federal and state obligations to provide required services and related staffing limits.
Board members pressed administrators on staffing, scheduling and charter impacts. Presenters said the district does not intend to hire staff solely to accommodate open-enrollment students and described balancing measures (shifting existing FTE between sites and using historical enrollment patterns) to meet demand without expanding staffing levels.
A public commenter thanked educators for their work; no public testimony opposed the enrollment recommendation. Board member Joe moved to approve the recommendation; Meredith seconded the motion. The board recorded the ayes and approved the administration's recommendation.
The vote finalizes the number of open seats the district will publish for the upcoming open-enrollment application window, which administration said will run from February through April with final confirmations in June. Administrators said the board will revisit numbers annually as part of its regular enrollment and facilities planning work.
