County approves small parkland purchase and adds Preston Court to highway maintenance

St. Mary's County commissioners approved two routine infrastructure items on Jan. 13: a small real‑property purchase for Recreation and Parks and the formal acceptance of Preston Court into the county highway maintenance system.
Director Ray Bevans told the board the parcel abuts hole No. 5 at Wicomico Shores and includes an existing run‑in shelter used by golfers; the county attorney’s office will handle most closing costs and the county will purchase the lot at SDAT value of $6,000. "This parcel is important for a couple different reasons," Bevans said, citing its proximity to the sand trap and its utility as an emergency shelter.
Public Works Director John Norris reported that developer work and county inspection are complete on a realignment at Preston Court in Hollywood, including centerline striping, stop bars, stop‑ahead markings and signage. Commissioners adopted a resolution to accept Preston Court into the county highway maintenance system, approved an ordinance establishing stop intersections and authorized a drainage and grading easement for Lot 1 of the Broyhill subdivision.
Both items passed by voice vote.
The county also noted outstanding permit steps on the Snow Hill boat ramp project and said staff will follow up with permit status information.
