Board revisits resolution supporting immigrant students; members debate district role, travel safety and interagency coordination

The board set aside substantial time Jan. 13 to revisit a resolution supporting immigrant students and families that the board first adopted a year earlier. Staff said the resolution has guided listening sessions with student advisory groups, equity advisory committees and culturally specific community partners, and that some operational steps — including communication changes and training for school staff — have already been implemented.

Several directors urged the board to take more visible, rapid action to address community fear about travel safety and federal enforcement activity. Director Perez said the board should "communicate honestly with families about what we can do, what we cannot do, and who has the authority to act," urging multi‑agency collaboration rather than assigning travel‑safety responsibility solely to the district. Other directors pressed for a co‑ordinated, district‑wide framework that could be consistently applied across schools and asked for clearer channels so principals can learn from peers.

Staff and others stressed constraints: the district cannot direct law enforcement, deploy employees into public rights‑of‑way or change statutory authority alone. Several board members proposed producing a concise, actionable list of district commitments and interagency expectations within a short calendar window and continuing to refine a revised resolution and operational templates for schools. Board leadership asked members to submit edits to the draft and to convene leadership to prepare a revised resolution for future action.
