Indio arts staff outlines mural and sculpture progress, flags $800,000 shortfall for Indio Arts Center renovation

City of Indio arts staff told the Public Arts Commission on Jan. 13 that several mural and sculpture projects are complete or in fabrication and that the Indio Arts Center renovation faces a funding shortfall unless additional funds are reallocated by the City Council.
Staff said two murals with augmented-reality components on the Loma Linda Building are complete and that an unveiling is planned in March. "The animation is already done, and so we're just waiting...We're looking to host that unveiling, sometime in March," a staff member said.
On the Fred Waring mural, staff said the mural is complete and attracted social-media attention; an unveiling is tentatively planned in February. A commissioner raised safety concerns about the site, saying, "my concern is...cars pick up on the art, and they fail to see somebody who's crossing that link." Staff replied that the CV Link passes under the Fred Waring mural and that there is no surface-level crossing at that location, meaning onsite logistics and parking are the main barriers to an outdoor unveiling.
On public-art sculpture projects, staff reported the Noah's Art sculpture at Shields Park is in fabrication with installation expected in 2026, and that Bravo's sculpture footings and metal panels are being fabricated off-site with an anticipated completion around Feb. 6. Staff also said the 911 memorial sculpture was approved to relocate to Miles Avenue Park near the Coachella Valley History Museum and that site preparations — irrigation rerouting, turf removal and electrical work — are underway.
Regarding the Indio Arts Center renovation, staff said three contractor bids were received, ranging from roughly $600,000 to about $2.1 million, while the city's budget for the project is currently $1,000,000. "We got the 3 proposals in. They range from 600,000 ... and then we had the $1,600,000 ... I think it was $2,100,000," a staff member said. Staff added they are "exploring roughly another $800,000" in additional funding sources and would need to request a reallocation of funds from the City Council.
Staff did not specify the exact sources of the additional $800,000, and said final awards and timelines will depend on securing funding and contractor availability. Commissioners heard the updates and asked clarifying questions; no formal decisions about additional funding were made at the Jan. 13 meeting.
