The City of Sonoma Planning Commission on Jan. 15 approved multiple sign permit requests across downtown and the West Napa corridor.
Associate Planner Jake Dunn presented four sign items: an illuminated wall sign and replacement monument panels at 540 West Napa Street; a wall sign and monument panel at 615 5th Street West (residential‑zoned property with lighting condition requested); a halo‑lit channel‑letter sign for Body Rock at 552 Broadway; and window signage and a variance for Elevate Sonoma at 548 Broadway (window signs slightly over percentage of window area). Staff found each proposal consistent with the sign code’s area and illumination standards; the 548 Broadway item required a variance because the window signage would occupy roughly 9% more of the window area than the 20% standard, which staff supported given limited façade options.
Commissioners asked about design alignment for the 548 Broadway window decals and asked that applicants coordinate final placement for a tidy appearance. Commissioners also discussed why design‑review workload shifted to the commission (lack of quorum at design‑review meetings) and suggested adding lighting standards to some approvals.
All sign permits were approved by unanimous votes. The commission noted it will consider broader sign‑code updates in a subsequent study session (Item 6.1) to standardize temporary signage, banner durations, and address LED/electronic signs citywide.
