At the Dec. 16 meeting commissioners reviewed several nonbinding updates and calendar items, including a proposed shift to a bimonthly meeting schedule, recent participation in the South Pasadena Citizens Police Academy, park-adoption reports and upcoming ribbon-cutting ceremonies.
Staff told the commission that a resolution to move to every-other-month meetings will be drafted and presented for adoption at the January meeting; the goal is to reduce cancellations and allow staff and commissioners more time to prepare fuller agendas. Commissioners noted that they can still call special meetings or form ad hoc committees to advance work between regular meetings.
Several commissioners described their experience in the South Pasadena Citizens Police Academy, calling the seven-week training informative for understanding police operations, emergency response and traffic enforcement. One commissioner noted officers Barillo and Kim by name and thanked them for their work. Commissioners discussed that the police unit is understaffed for some functions (mental-health response) and that the city will need to plan for increased demand during large events.
Staff announced two ribbon-cutting ceremonies scheduled for the next morning: Dr. Dimitri Solis Memorial Park at 10:00 a.m., followed by a smaller ceremony at about 11:15 a.m. Staff asked commissioners to attend as their schedules allow.
Other topics discussed included library makerspace access (noting an existing high-school makerspace), submission of park-feedback photos via the Citi app so Public Works can create service requests, and clarifications to municipal code recently addressed by ordinance to correct inconsistencies for commission membership and youth-commissioner eligibility.
Staff said they will bring the pickleball item back in the new year with a more formal recommendation and will present related items to the Natural Resources & Environmental Commission and Public Safety before returning to this commission and then to City Council for final action.
The meeting adjourned at roughly 5:32 p.m.; the next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 12, 2026 at 6:30 p.m.
