HRC to partner with United for Immigrant Justice for International Human Rights Day event

The Eugene Human Rights Commission agreed to form an ad hoc committee to plan an International Human Rights Day event in partnership with United for Immigrant Justice (UIJ).
Feather Crawford, a UIJ leadership team member, described the group’s mission to support immigrant justice and strengthen community trust; she noted the network’s recent organizing around ALPR cameras and efforts to connect community leaders with city and law-enforcement officials. Crawford said UIJ hosts monthly meetings with a diverse listserv of local stakeholders, and that the network has engaged local leaders including the city manager and police chiefs in recent months.
Commissioners discussed event format options used in prior years (panel conversations, hybrid formats or documentary presentations) and suggested focusing the year’s event on sanctuary laws and gaps in protections. Commissioners asked staff to convene an ad hoc planning group and to include at least one UIJ representative in planning meetings. A motion to form the ad hoc committee passed by voice vote.
What’s next: Staff will convene the ad hoc committee, confirm participation and return with a recommended format and timeline; the commission discussed holding the event around Dec. 10 but noted a weekend date could increase attendance.
