Parks superintendent introduces new assistant superintendent; staff recap Winterfest and NIPCO opening

Jamieson Cernicki, superintendent of city parks, introduced Nathan Kane as the board's new assistant superintendent and asked Kane to speak about his background. Kane said he joins from Clarksville Parks and Recreation where he worked for nearly nine years, with experience in aquatics, programming and capital projects. "The best thing to me about parks and recreation is the experiences we create," Kane said, citing bringing youth programs to major venues as memorable moments.
Cernicki and staff reviewed Winterfest highlights and thanked sponsors including AEP, NIPCO, Green Stream, Granger Community Church, Stevenson's Brass Elk and the Elkhart Library. Staff reported NIPCO Water and Ice Park opened on Dec. 6 and that private rentals and birthday parties are already being booked; staff said facility redesigns have increased rental income.
Cernicki noted staff will hold a strategic planning retreat and a park-board training ('park board 101') and will share 2026 goals and budget details with the board at a later meeting. The board welcomed Kane and thanked staff for Winterfest work and sponsorship coordination.
