The State Board recognized Cressa Reed of Neshoba Central High School as Mississippi's 2025 History Teacher of the Year during its Jan. 15 meeting. The award is presented by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and recognizes one outstanding American history teacher from each state.
Board presenters noted the national scale of the Gilder Lehrman program and that over 7,000 educators were nominated at the national level in 2025. Reed described hands-on classroom projects — including covered-wagon simulations, student-created tenement models and steam-engine demonstrations — that combine STEM and history learning and said the recognition reflected her work with students and support from district leaders and family.
Why it matters: the award highlights classroom-level practice and a focus on project-based learning that the department said supports the state's broader strategic goals for student engagement and proficiency.
