Summary
The HRIC and partners outlined plans for the Move Like King/MLK celebration, announced eight mini-grant recipients to be unveiled at the event, confirmed a free Black Excellence film night on Feb. 7, and said the library trustees voted to host a community fridge while coordinating with the health department.
HRIC members used their meeting to finalize logistics for the upcoming Move Like King event and related community programming, and to update residents on grant awards and local initiatives.
The committee described the MLK "Move Like King" event as a two-part program with an open-house portion (about 3:00–3:45 p.m.) followed by roughly 45 minutes of formal programming that will include essay winners, student art and musical performances. The chair said the theme will focus on "power," community narratives and student voices.
The HRIC’s mini-grant subcommittee reviewed applications for the Friends of Danvers Diversity Fund’s first-year grant program and selected eight recipients. "Recipients were notified via email with the committee copied," said Sarah, who led the grants update; the committee said full details will be announced at the MLK event and that grantees must report back within the year.
The committee also announced a Black Excellence event on Feb. 7 from 5–8 p.m. at Maple Street Church featuring film screenings and children’s programming; the event is free and organizers said they expect strong attendance.
Chair members reported that the library trustees voted in favor of locating a community fridge in town and that the HRIC will coordinate with the health department on safety and food-safety protocols before installation.
Other community business included a proposal from a young attendee to create a student liaison position and to nominate students for local recognition; the committee expressed support for researching both ideas further. The Friends of the Library open house was noted for Jan. 31 (2–4 p.m.) and a concert of spirituals is scheduled for Feb. 21 (2–4 p.m.) in the Gordon Room.
Next steps: HRIC will finalize event logistics and publicize grant recipients at the MLK event; health-department coordination on the community fridge will continue; committee staff will investigate the feasibility of a student liaison role and nomination process.
