Commission approves budget amendments, earnest money for school property and several confirmations

At the Jan. 15 meeting the Rutherford County Board of Commissioners approved several budget and administrative items presented by the Budget, Finance and Investment Committee.
Chairman Robert Peay moved three budget items: (a) amend the general fund to increase expenditures for jail building improvements by $179,500 funded by a decrease in unassigned fund balance; (b) make a statutorily required payment to charter schools (amounts listed in an exhibit incorporated into the resolution); and (c) fund $65,000 in earnest money to purchase five parcels adjacent to McFadden Elementary School, to be paid from leftover capital-project funds for the Church Street project. Each motion passed; the earnest-money resolution passed by a recorded vote of 19 yes and 2 no.
The commission also confirmed a slate of notaries and board appointments, including the confirmation of Chris Copeland to the Codes Adjustment and Appeals Board after a roll-call election between Copeland and Greg Gulick. Steering also recommended several reappointments (Tom Beckman and Michael Shirley to the conservation board) and the planning-commission confirmation of Shannon Hicks.
The consent agenda was approved by recorded vote. Commissioners also announced upcoming committee meetings and a special called meeting Jan. 22 for a Plan Rutherford public hearing.
