McDonald said community providers, including the hospital, were prioritizing masking and offering antiviral treatments; he described local compliance with seven-day self-isolation after symptom onset and praised coordination between the district and Fallon-area hospitals.
Board members raised alarm about declines in routine childhood vaccination coverage and discussed outreach strategies aimed at younger parents. Denise Ferguson said vaccination rates have fallen and asked what CNHD should do to improve uptake and public understanding ahead of school enrollment. “How do we educate and change the stigma within the CNHD counties?” she asked. Clinical staff emphasized a nonjudgmental, information-first approach: “The clinical staff...believe in vaccinations. They believe in herd immunity, believe in science,” Dr. McDonald said, and recommended compassionate, factual conversations with families.
The board discussed using the new dashboard and redesigned website to publish short, shareable educational snippets and link county-level statistics, and Shannon Ernst said CNHD will hire a public-health program coordinator to lead outreach and standardize messaging across counties. Staff noted that Nevada will not adopt a recent CDC vaccine-schedule recommendation (per the transcript) and CNHD will continue to use shared clinical decision-making and updated standing orders.
