Radford City School Board elects Gloria Boyd chair; Swing named vice chair, approves calendar and new courses

Gloria Boyd was elected chair of the Radford City School Board during the board’s organizational meeting, and Jane Swing was confirmed as vice chair, the board announced after motions and affirmative votes.

The board approved the consent agenda by voice vote and accepted a schedule of regular meetings (second Tuesday at 6 p.m.), noting one calendar change that moved the April meeting to the 8th because of a conflict. The board also approved new Radford High School course offerings presented by Principal Adam Simpson to permit on-time registration for the 2026–27 school year.

Simpson told the board the Program of Studies packet includes several new electives and course adjustments, including a twentieth-century Virginia and U.S. history elective, a Piano Lab 2 follow-up to this year’s successful lab, and a rebranding of dual-enrollment calculus courses to provide an AP test option where appropriate. He said the changes also adjust add/drop timelines to reflect the semester/block schedule.

Board members discussed committee and regional representation and confirmed delegates and alternates for regional boards and the Virginia School Boards Association. They approved the sale of several surplus items after a brief discussion of condition and public sale procedures.

The board convened into closed session later in the meeting to discuss personnel appointments, resignations and retirements and to consult with legal counsel. After returning to open session the board certified the closed session and approved personnel matters by motion and voice vote.

The board set its next regular meeting for Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. at the school board office and adjourned.
