Ditscheit said reclassification recognizes skills that allow an employee to climb trees, work from bucket trucks and perform more complex field work. Forester Brian Pilat said the employee in question started as an Arborist 1, received in‑house training over the last year and "has attained those skills," enabling the crew to perform that work on city streets.
Committee members asked whether the city could create more flexible administrative procedures so hires could be classified at hire or reclassified internally without returning to committee and council for approval each time. Staff said they are exploring options to standardize that flexibility but had not brought a formal policy change for approval at this meeting.
Alder Grant moved to approve the reclassification; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. The transcript records the motion but does not include a numeric roll-call tally. The committee moved on to routine personnel items and adjourned.
