The Cerritos City Council on Jan. 12 authorized staff to plan and implement a 5K run/walk on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the Cerritos Sports Complex as a community event to celebrate the city’s 70th anniversary.
Staff estimated a base cost of $14,000 for staging the event if sponsorships and participant fees are not secured, and recommended charging a modest participant fee and soliciting vendor and sponsor support to defray costs. Mayor Pro Tem Linda Johnson and other council members outlined possible sponsor and vendor approaches and encouraged staff to coordinate with local schools, Cerritos College and neighborhood groups to maximize participation.
Council approved the staff recommendation (options 2 and 3 in the staff report) by unanimous vote and asked staff to return with sponsor packages and promotional materials. The proposed theme for the event is “Move with the Herd,” and staff said an event T‑shirt incorporating the city’s 70th anniversary would be produced for participants and sponsors.
