Resident accuses two councilors of misconduct; council condemns anonymous threatening letters

During public comment at the Jan. 13 Tolland Town Council meeting, a resident identified himself as Jonathan (John) Buckler and accused two council members of an inappropriate relationship and of orchestrating smear campaigns. "Well, they should resign immediately," the speaker said during his remarks, and he claimed to have phone records and photos he described as evidence.

The allegations were made from the public‑comment lectern and were not resolved at the meeting; no council action was taken on the accusations. Council members responded elsewhere in the meeting to a related but separate issue: multiple elected officials had received anonymous, threatening letters and some residents reported property vandalism.

"I wanna state unequivocally that anyone who sends such trash is a vile coward," one councilor said, condemning the anonymous mailings and announcing the family's history of filing police complaints when they were targeted. Several councilors urged colleagues and residents to file reports with the Connecticut State Police and, where appropriate, the Postal Inspector, and to pursue community dialogue rather than harassment.

Councilors stressed that political differences should be handled through debate and conversation and not through threats or vandalism. The chair asked staff and local law enforcement to assist any residents who wished to pursue formal complaints; multiple council members volunteered help and emphasized the importance of civil discourse.
