Commission approves a package of budget amendments for schools, jail and sheriff programs

Mister Ladd presented the Hamblen County Department of Education amendment increasing the budget by $47,286 to accept small grants (including $3,500 for a safety cameras mini-grant) and reclass $5,000 to purchase barber-class textbooks; the amendment also funds promoting three teacher assistants to Registered Behavior Technicians.
The school nutrition amendment increased funding by about $600,000 from fund balance to cover an approved bookkeeper position, outside repair contracts, supplies (notably replacement ink cartridges) and $500,000 toward a new serving line at East High School. Ladd said the USDA program providing free breakfast and lunch has increased participation.
The jail budget recognized a $5,284.78 refund from Southern Health Partners for inmate medical drugs and supplies. The sheriff’s department had multiple entries including a $225 reimbursement for a training fee, $10,000 budgeting for DARE supplies funded from opioid money, a $64,500 recruitment and retention grant to recognize revenue and offset expense lines, and a $1,638,580.07 shift to a special projects account to segregate SRO funds. Each amendment was moved and carried by voice vote.
Committee chairs said staff will supply more details in regular reporting; no item was recorded as being denied.
