Milpitas recognizes youth essay winners; proclamation marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Milpitas — The Milpitas City Council used the start of its Jan. 13 meeting to recognize young writers and community volunteers and to proclaim Jan. 19, 2026 as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the city.
Assistant Scoutmaster Eugene Choi introduced Troop 2468, an all‑girls scouting troupe that led the Pledge of Allegiance. The council presented certificates to winners in three grade divisions for the Library and Education Advisory Commission’s youth essay contest, noting the city’s partnership with the Milpitas Jose Estevez Library and the Santa Clara County Library District. Several library commissioners and staff, including the commission liaison, joined students for photos.
Mayor read a formal proclamation honoring Dr. King’s legacy; the person scheduled to receive the proclamation could not attend and council members said the proclamation would be mailed to the recipient.
Council members and staff thanked students, parents and library volunteers for participating in the contest and encouraged continued civic engagement through writing programs.
