Carpinteria High School presents SPSA; board approves single-plan and hears student update

Gerardo Cornejo presented Carpinteria High School’s Single Plan for Student Achievement to the board on Jan. 13, outlining staffing, enrollment and academic strategies for 2025–26 and asking the board to approve the plan.
Cornejo said CHS currently has about 187 students and described staffing levels and program offerings: AP courses (biology, English, psychology, U.S. government and others), dual-enrollment classes in partnership with local community colleges and a robust career-technical education program with nearly 350 students participating in CTE courses districtwide. He discussed dashboard results, noting improvements in several areas compared with prior years and underscoring challenges in English language arts and math for some student subgroups, particularly English learners and socioeconomically disadvantaged students.
Cornejo described curriculum pilots (CommonLit 360) and teacher practices to address AI use in student writing: teachers require initial writing on paper, followed by feedback and appropriate AI use for refinement. He also outlined goals to increase student performance, expand dual-enrollment opportunities (including welding and other CTE pathways), and use advisory periods to support students with D/F grades.
After questions from trustees about CAASPP testing and pathway completion rates, a motion to approve the SPSA was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
The board also heard a student report from Lacey with scholarship updates, a recognition of Esparza Scholar Athlete Vivian Huskins and an invitation to an informational night for prospective students on Feb. 4.
