Montgomery County issues statement marking Muslim American Heritage Month, condemning anti-Muslim and anti-Arab bigotry

Montgomery County issued a county statement marking Muslim American Heritage Month and urging community engagement while condemning anti-Muslim and anti-Arab bigotry.

An unidentified county speaker said the Muslim American community in Montgomery County is "a vibrant, diverse mosaic of cultures, languages, and traditions that make our county 1 of the best places in the world to call home." The speaker said celebrating the month "both now and throughout the year offers us an opportunity to recognize the contributions that strengthen our economy, civic, and cultural life."

The statement also addressed community safety and inclusion. "While there is much to celebrate, we must also confront the reality of anti Muslim hatred and anti Arab bigotry that many of our Muslim American friends and neighbors continue to experience," the county statement said. "We strongly condemn hatred and discrimination and are clear that they have no place in our community."

Beyond words of condemnation, the statement called for proactive community engagement and education and noted that "the council has received a calendar of events organized by the Muslim American community offering many opportunities to gather, connect, and learn from 1 another." The speaker framed that calendar and ongoing programming as ways to strengthen community ties.

The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of county values. "Today is a reaffirmation of Montgomery County's core values, unity, respect, and solidarity," the speaker said. The county did not provide additional details about enforcement actions or specific programs tied to the statement.
