Summary
Washoe County Communications Division previews Season 5 of its Washoe Life podcast, promising monthly episodes tied to the America250 celebration and features on programs such as Crossroads, Fly Ranch, Riverbend Park and Northern Nevada Mental Health Services.
Washoe County’s communications division said its podcast Washoe Life is entering a fifth season and will devote monthly episodes to Nevada’s role in the America250 celebrations while continuing to profile local programs and history.
"We're on YouTube now," said Nancy Lewinhagen, a host and member of the county communications division, noting the show’s expanded reach and ability to show sites that are difficult to describe in a press release. Co-host Bethany Drysdale said the podcast’s goal is to “go beyond a press release” by interviewing people directly impacted by county programs.
Why it matters: the hosts said the format lets listeners hear first-person accounts of services and place-based stories that county press releases cannot fully convey. Drysdale cited a two-part Crossroads series that visited sober-living residences and featured participants and staff on-site to highlight how the program supports people in recovery.
The season preview touched on several planned episodes. Hosts described a lighter installment with Phil Campbell, a circus music leader who performed at his piano; an on-site visit to Fly Ranch, adjacent to the playa and tied to activities of the Burning Man community; and a Riverbend Park episode in Verdi that grew out of a land-swap to create river access and a new trailhead. The hosts also discussed a recorded episode at the Northern Nevada Mental Health Services campus that includes interviews with Mike Wilden about the site’s history and the relocation of a cemetery once associated with the facility.
Lewinhagen said the county will mark America250 with a regular feature and cited an upcoming conversation with Judge Barry Breslow about the county courthouse and plans the Board of County Commissioners is leading to kick off the statewide celebration. Drysdale said the season will also explore cultural threads of the American West, including an episode idea about Pony Express rerides.
The hosts invited listener suggestions by emailing washoe311@washoecounty.gov and credited Jeremiah Ramos as the show’s producer.
The episode preview is promotional and informational in nature; it does not record any board votes or official policy actions. The county communications hosts closed the preview with anniversary greetings and a thank-you to listeners.
