The Creative Commission on Jan. 13 approved the minutes of its Dec. 16 special meeting and discussed staffing, permits and event-related cost recovery during a meeting that focused largely on upcoming community events. A motion to approve the Dec. 16 minutes was moved, seconded and passed by roll call; commissioners Katie, Ellen Martin, Judy Refreso and Maria Roos voted yes.
During announcements commissioners agreed to make a 'review past events' item a standing agenda entry to allow regular after-action reports. Members recapped the Girls on the Run 5K and praised organizers for turnout and logistics, while noting runner feedback about additional porta-potties and some parking complaints despite advance notices and mailed postcards to nearby residents. Staff said Public Works typically does not pick up event barricades on Sundays; barriers were collected the following Monday or Tuesday.
Commissioners also raised whether the city is reimbursed for barricades and other services when permitting non-city events. One commissioner asked, “So does the city get reimbursed for having to ... move all the stuff and do all the barriers and all that?” Staff responded those services are provided as a public benefit but suggested reviewing permit fees and the budget to determine if recovery of some costs is appropriate; no formal budget decision was taken.
With no additional business the chair adjourned the meeting.
