County says Coast Guard grounding prompts request for emergency dredge at Walter Slough

Dare County officials told the Board of Commissioners that a 47-foot United States Coast Guard lifeboat ran aground in Walter Slough, and the county is preparing an emergency dredge request to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Vice Chairman House reported that the grounding occurred during recent winds and that county engineers will submit emergency dredge plans to the Army Corps. “We should be submitting our engineers will be submitting the, dredge plans to them, this afternoon and, waiting for the army corps to respond back to us,” he said, adding that staff had been coordinating with county engineers and finance staff.
The county said the slough had recently been dredged but that shoaling at the edges created the hazard. County staff described the outreach to the Army Corps as an expedited, emergency request; no vote or formal commitment of county funds for dredging was recorded at the special meeting.
