Board fills multiple vacancies: planning, agricultural district, TDA and parks & rec appointments approved

At the Jan. 21 meeting the commissioners appointed members to several advisory boards: Brett Keeler to the planning board, Joe Johnson to the Voluntary Agricultural District board, Morgan Rodriguez Tasco as TDA District 3 representative, and Heather Whitley to the Parks & Recreation Board.
The Board of Commissioners made several appointments to advisory boards during the Jan. 21 meeting.
Planning Board The board voted to appoint Brett Keeler to an at-large seat on the Planning Board with a term to run from Feb. 1, 2025 through Jan. 31, 2028. Planning staff had recommended Keeler based on prior service on the Board of Adjustment and local planning experience.
Voluntary Agricultural District (VAD) The board appointed Joe Johnson to a vacancy on the Voluntary Agricultural District board. Johnson, a 28-year county resident and former staffer in the North Carolina Senate with agricultural policy experience, filled a role the staff said had been open for two years.
Tourism Development Authority (TDA) For the TDA the board appointed Morgan Rodriguez Tasco as the District 3 representative. The board noted collector positions and district eligibility rules when discussing the TDA roster; staff clarified the District 3 seat was the relevant vacancy.
Parks and Recreation Board Zach White, parks director, had recommended Heather Whitley for an at-large Parks & Recreation seat; the board appointed Whitley to fill the remainder of a term ending June 30, 2026.
Voting and process All appointments passed on voice votes during the meeting. Staff said the positions will begin as specified and fill the remainder of the posted terms.
Ending Staff will update board rosters and notify the appointees of start dates and onboarding steps.
