The South Saint Paul School Board on Feb. 24 approved a joint powers agreement with Dakota County for school wellness work and accepted a SHIP (Statewide Health Improvement Partnership) grant portion — just over $7,000 — to expand an outdoor classroom and garden at Lincoln Center.
Assistant Principal Jen Sechhauer told the board the district and Lincoln PTA have been working on a design for an outdoor classroom adjacent to an existing garden on Fourth Street. The SHIP funds will pay for garden expansion, tables and chairs, a rolling board and an overhead canopy; future work would include installing an accessible, weather-resistant surface for wheelchair access.
Sechhauer said the plan is to begin perimeter and garden work this spring, using the garden club and PTA support, and to pursue additional grants and fundraising to finish the accessible surface and other infrastructure. She said curricular materials tied to standards will be purchased so the space can be used by science classes and across the school.
The board approved both the joint powers agreement with Dakota County and acceptance of the SHIP money by unanimous voice vote.
Ending: Administrators said they will begin garden perimeter work this spring and return with updates on fundraising and construction as the project proceeds.
