South St. Paul students highlight winter athletics, arts and clubs at board meeting

At its Feb. 24 meeting the South Saint Paul School Board heard presentations from coaches, advisors and students detailing winter-season accomplishments across athletics, arts and student clubs.
Highlights the board heard: - Theater: Eric Holson described the winter one-act program, which included six short plays, a competition one-act, a middle school one-act and four student-written student-directed skits. Holson said 73 students participated (49 actors, 15 technicians and 10 student directors); four student writers were paid $50 each from the Deb Clark Memorial Theater Fund for the playwriting contest and the program advanced to a section competition.
- Girls basketball: Coach Isaac Douglas said the team reached its third straight season with double-digit wins and earned a 4 seed in the section playoffs. Senior Scarlett Johansson was named this year's Athena award winner, an honor for outstanding female senior athletes.
- Dance and gymnastics: Roz Wilson reported about 31 dancers, including three All-State dancers; varsity jazz placed first at sections and placed at state competitions. Gymnastics coach Kaya described individual growth and noted a season-high team score of 121.95; senior Scarlett (gymnastics) qualified for state.
- Cheer: Chris Weinfertner described rebuilding the cheer program to 12 cheerleaders and three managers; the squad has been visible at games and raised funds for equipment and uniforms.
- Student groups: Amber Gay and student leaders described the Black Pride Organization's HBCU college fair attendance, kindness retreat, partnerships with Dodge Nature Center, a food drive with Neighbors Inc., and upcoming events for Black History Month and multicultural day. Emily Frumstead and student officers described Women's Society activities including a movie night fundraiser to support menstrual products donations and community service projects.
- Hockey and wrestling: Coaches Dave Palmquist (girls hockey) and Zach Palmquist (boys hockey) and wrestling coaches reported seasons that included section finals appearances and multiple individual qualifiers for state tournaments. The board heard that Bailey Vesper (girls hockey) plans to play college hockey and that several athletes were recognized in local media and statewide award lists.
Board recognition: The superintendent and board highlighted teacher nominations for Teacher of the Year, student academic honors and upcoming performances and tournaments; the board encouraged community support for upcoming events.
Ending: The board thanked the students, coaches and advisors for their presentations and noted opportunities to see performances and competitions in March and April.
