Saline Middle School student council outlines service projects, inclusion and fundraising to board

A group of Saline Middle School student council members presented their work to the Saline Area Schools Board of Education at the Sept. 30 meeting, describing outreach, fundraising and inclusion activities they run at the middle school.
"Our mission is to make the school experience better, even better for everyone, and help everyone's voice be heard," Shadi Aldib, a student council member, told the board during the student showcase.
The students outlined recurring activities: Acts of Kindness month (daily small actions such as holding a door or inviting someone to sit with you), candy-gram fundraisers sold for $1 in February and November, and an ongoing Student Voice group that will meet directly with the principal and assistant principal to raise school issues.
Student council members said they partner annually with PALS for inclusion week (one example day: "rock your fun socks day"); help plan the UE snowball dance (meetings with PTO to set up decorations and signs); run a school store selling shirts, hats and merchandise at lunch; and run charity fundraising such as baskets for a spring craft show.
Several students described leadership opportunities they attended outside the district, including the Dexter Leadership Conference, where students worked with peers from other districts. The group said they organize elections for ninth grade, lead morning announcements and prepare staff-appreciation letters.
Board members asked follow-up questions about fundraising proceeds and how new members are recruited. The students said some proceeds support school clubs and charity donations such as Toys for Tots; Natalie Green, the student advisor for council, confirmed the council coordinates recruitment with staff support.
Board members praised the presentation and thanked the students for their work. The students took a group photo with the board before leaving the meeting.
