Superintendent reports enrollment gains, construction and school shelter work; finance staff gives preliminary July collections

The Piedmont superintendent updated the board on staffing, enrollment and facilities and the district’s finance staff presented a preliminary July financial report.
The superintendent said the district’s new-teacher academy had a smaller cohort this year and praised staff for the event. The superintendent also said the district’s student count is up by about 140 students compared with the previous year, and displayed comparative figures for the current and prior year.
On facilities, the superintendent showed progress on a new parking lot at the football stadium and said lights should be installed and operating within a few weeks. The superintendent also described a new storm shelter at Stone Ridge that will also accommodate six classrooms and said the shelter construction is expected to be finished by spring.
In the financial report, district finance staff said July is typically a low-collections month. The finance presenter said the district collected "a little over $470,000" in the general fund for July, reported bond-sale proceeds of $11,925,000 that arrived in July, building fund collections of $3,034 and sinking-fund collections of $36,733. Child-nutrition collections were reported as zero for the month. The presenter said final carryover numbers were pending an auditor’s closeout and that the state child-nutrition auditing requirements have delayed final audit work.

Board members reacted positively to the enrollment growth and facility progress. The superintendent said that when storm-shelter work and lights are complete, every school in the district will have a shelter by spring.
