Local retired-teachers group and Master Gardeners award classroom grants to three Kent teachers

Jim Arquilla of the retired teachers association introduced the program and presented certificates and cash for grants to Mackenzie Brody (Stanton Middle School, an eighth‑grade entrepreneurship/food truck project), Ellen Budd (music teacher, left‑handed guitars) and Kristen Capen (a peer‑modeling communication buddies program).
A Master Gardeners representative also described $500 awards to educators for student garden projects at Longpoint and Holden elementary schools. Superintendents and board members thanked the donors and asked that appreciation be passed to the wider membership.
The board received the awards as recognition; no board action was required to accept charitable gifts in the excerpted discussion.
