The Newport News City Council opened its Nov. 12 session by presenting a proclamation honoring the Newport News Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated for longstanding civic engagement and scholarship programs. Vicky Williams Cullins, who identified herself as the chapter's social-action chair, thanked the council and described the chapter's local voter-registration, restoration and youth programs.
The city also recognized the Newport News Public Art Foundation’s inaugural artists-in-residence initiative. Becca Sidman, director of the Public Art Foundation, introduced sculptor Dathan Kane, who said the residency allowed him to develop three-dimensional pieces from his earlier two-dimensional work and thanked the community for the opportunity.
Council members posed for a photo with chapter members and lauded the sorority’s work in education and civic engagement. The ceremonial recognition and the public-art presentation preceded the business portion of the agenda.
